Abstract
A method to estimate the leaf area of five cultivars of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) plants using leaf area devices (LADs) was developed. LADs were made of a clear plastic sheet cut by an engraving machine to resemble the shape of a coffee leaf. Two leaf-shaped lines on the LAD were used to determine three size groups. By using LADs and counting the number of leaves in each size group, the total leaf area of plants in the field was obtained. The estimation errors were less than or equal to 10.5% for four cultivars of young coffee plants and less than or equal to 7.8% for mature coffee plants.
