Abstract
Litter records (totalling 1323) of Large White (LW) and Landrace (LR) pigs and their F1 crosses were analysed to evaluate the direct genetic and additive maternal effects on pre-weaning litter size and weight. Direct genetic effects were important for most litter traits studied. Additive maternal differences were observed for litter weight at 3 weeks of age favouring the crossbreds with LR dams. Direct heterosis effects for litter size and weight at birth were not significant.
