The effect of sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] peel as a maize replacement on layer performance in chickens

Leonard N. Agwunobi

Abstract

Sixty point-of-lay chickens were randomly allotted to six groups of 10 birds and fed on six test diets containing 0, 11.5, 17.3, 23.1, 46.2, and 48.0% sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] peel corresponding to 0, 20, 30, 40, 80, and 100% maize replacement, respectively. Feed intake was not significantly affected by the treatment. Egg production, egg weight, and feed efficiency were significantly (P < 0.05) depressed at the 80 and 100% substitution levels. The differences in these parameters were not significant (P > 0.05) up to the 40% substitution level. The result indicates that sweet potato peel can replace maize at the 40% level or constitute 23% of the layer's diet without adverse effect on egg production, egg weight, and feed efficiency.
