Effect of organic recycling of fodder legumes in stabilizing productivity of rainfed cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) on marginal lands

Organic recycling techniques were evaluated for their ability to stabilize and enhance the productivity on rainfed cotton (Gossypium hirustum L.) grown on marginal lands in Central India. Varying levels of applied inorganic N (0, 30 and 60 kg ha-1) were compared with different organic amendments such as fodder cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] as green manure, alone, or with subabul (Leucaena sp.) loppings as mulch, with or without farmyard manure (FYM), FYM alone, and a control. Results over two years indicated that green manuring and mulching increased seed cotton yield by 24%. As a result, about 30 kg of inorganic nitrogen ha-1 can be saved. The effect of organic supplement was more pronounced at the lower level of nitrogen.
