Abstract
The usual measure of relative advantage of intercropping, the land equivalent ratio (LER), and its various extensions and forms are modified to take into consideration differences in maturity periods of the intercrops. These modifications are necessary if optimum use of land resources, especially when limited, for maximum yield output is to be achieved. Results of the modifications indicate that the LER and its various forms overestimate intercropping advantage in relation to optimum land use when the intercrops differ in maturity periods
