Abstract

One hundred and sixty cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cultivars/germplasm lines were screened in a greenhouse for resistance to cowpea severe mosaic virus (CPSMV) (Trinidad isolate). Four lines were immune, 1 was tolerant, 3 were resistant, 12 were moderately resistant, and the remainder were susceptible. None possessed hypersensitive resistance. Comparison of the reactions of some lines tested by other workers with CPSMV strains from Puerto Rico, Suriname, Brazil, Arkansas (U.S.A.), Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Mexico showed the Trinidad isolate to be pathogenically distinct.
