Abstract

Ramie was grown during 1981-1982 and 1982—1983 with four annual cuttings. N was applied as urea as (1) a single application, (2) in two split dressings, and (3) in three split dressings at rates of 25, 50 and 75 kg N ha-1 at each cutting. Highest fibre yield, dry matter (DM) production and N uptake resulted from the two-split application of N at all levels. Soil NO3- nitrogen analyses after each cutting showed that the double split application at 50 kg N ha-1 per cutting gave maximum soil N content. DM and fibre yield were enhanced with increase in N rate up to 50 kg N h-1 and declined at 75 kg N ha-1.
