Abstract

The history of the development of experimental design in agricultural research is reviewed and the philosophy of the modern approach to experimentation is developed. The need for extensive research into the design and analysis of agricultural experiments is stressed, particularly for the tropical environment where they have to be laid out on ten-am with often unsuspected heterogeneity.
