Abstract

Dry matter yields of 10 promising tropical grasses were studies at the Range Research Station, Dhabeji, Sind to select suitable forages for large scale reseeding in the tropical arid rangelands of Pakistan. Sowing was done in lines of 50cm apart during February 1976. All plots were clipped annually at 7cm stubble height at the end of summer growing season. Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) and blue panic (Panicum antidotale) out-yielded other grasses during an eight-year study period. Pissar (Chrysopogon montanus) and gorkha (Lasiurus sindicus) are relatively less productive but could be seeded in combination with buffel grass. The study has led to reseeding of buffel grass. Blue panic and gorkha over 5000 ha in the tropical sandy rangelands of Thai, D. G. Khan, Kohistand and Thraparker. The production technology for these grasses has also been developed for reseeding over 30 million ha of desert rangeland of Pakistan.
