Abstract
Changes in the nutritive value of cereal stalks and legume haulms with time after crop harvest were studied. The cereals evaluated were maize, millet and sorghum; the legumes were cowpea and groundnuts. Crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), lignin and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of the crop residues were studied at crop harvest and fortnightly thereafter over a 70-85 day period. For both cereal stalks and legume haulms, it is suggested that these be gathered for use or conserved within 28 days following harvest of the parent crop.
