Abstract
The productivity of Friesian cattle in the Vom area of Nigeria was assessed during the 10-year period 1970-1979. Average lactation yield, yield day-1, lactation length and butterfat percentage were 2893.0 kg, 9.9 kg, 292 days and 4.4, respectively. The average age at first calving was 37.9 months for imported heifers and 29.4 months for home-bred heifers. The subsequent average calving for all animals was 364 days. It was concluded that the productivity of Friesian cattle is acceptable, considering the less-than-optimum environmental and climatic conditions to which they were exposed.
