Abstract
Cocoa was introduced into the State of Bahia from the Amazon region in 1746; today, 85% of Brazilian cocoa is grown in Bahia. The pathogen of cocoa, Crinipellis perniciosa, although responsible of severe losses in all cocoa-producing countries of South and Central America, was absent from this region of Brazil. This Paper is the first record of the occurrence of witches’ broom disease in Bahia, the second largest concentration of cocoa in the World.
