Abstract

Seed yield and yield components were assessed in F1s of six mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.)Wilczek] genotypes obtained through diallel crossing. The additive and dominant gene actions were significant for pod clusters per plant, pods per plant, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, and biological yield. The only significant additive components of variance were branches per plant, pod length, and seeds per pod. The additive gene action was prevalent over the dominant gene action for all the traits examined. The positive and negative alleles were in unequal frequencies among parents for all traits, except branches per plant. The estimates of narrow- and broad-sense heritability were relatively large for pod clusters per plant, pods per plant, pod length, and 1000-seed weight. It was concluded that a positive response to selection could be expected for yield component traits to improve overall seed yield in mungbean.
