Abstract
Twenty-four varieties and lines of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were tested for growth, yield, quality, and bacterial wilt resistance at the Central Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair (Andaman) during the years 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The varietal variation for growth, yield, quality, and bacterial wilt resistance was significant in all the varieties and lines. The two-year results showed that, of the 24 varieties studied, LE-3704 gave the highest average fruit yield of 30 815 kg ha-1 followed by BT-1 of 30 478 kg ha-1. These varieties also produced the largest number of fruits per plant. The highest total soluble solids were observed from SUN-7610 and BT-1, while 100% resistance to bacterial wilt disease was recorded in BT-118-4-1-1, BT-116-8-1-1, and Tomato- 415 during both years. However, varieties and lines such as BT-1, BT-215, BT-117-5-3-1, BL-342-1,LE-3704, and Utkal were found to be statistically equal.
