Abstract

The effects of planting dates on yield of a Downy mildew streak resistant maize variety (Zea mays L.) was studied in a field trial at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi Research Farm, Makurdi, Nigeria, in 2002 and 2003 cropping seasons. The treatments consisted of three planting dates replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. The results indicated that plant height and cob length were reduced as planting dates advanced. Also, days to 50% silking was observed to be delayed as planting dates progressed. Although cob weight and 1000-grain weight were not affected by planting dates, maize planted in early June recorded a yield increase of 0.71 t ha-1 over the late June planting.
