Abstract
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the educational landscape, educators face an apparent dilemma: to what extent and in what ways should AI-driven innovations be deployed in teaching on the one hand, or should the priority remain to safeguard the authenticity and essential human elements of education. Striking a balance between the two is crucial in ensuring that AI benefits are harnessed without compromising the fundamental values that define a holistic educational experience. The paper explores the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in Higher education, focusing on its potential to personalize learning, enhance efficiency, and improve accessibility. Concerns related to the preservation of teacher-student relationships, development of critical thinking skills, data privacy, and bias are all analyzed. Undoubtedly, AI can be a valuable tool to support and enrich education but cannot replace quality human contribution. It remains important to emphasize ethical considerations, teacher training, and ensuring quality education. The focus should be on achieving a nuanced equilibrium between innovation and quality assurance. The paper discusses strategies for educators and institutions to navigate the disruptions brought by AI which are likely to accelerate in the coming years. It draws upon existing research and adds to our comprehension of how these technologies are transforming established educational standards. Equally important, the paper offers important insights into the evolving landscape of technological use and application within higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Caribbean and serves to highlight key concerns for policy and practice in this area.
