Abstract

Discusses matters relating to carnival from the perspective of one entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the administration of culture in contemporary Trinidad and Tobago. In keeping with the theme "Carnival, Calypso, Chutney and Society in Contemporary Trinidad and Tobago" begins by recognizing the nature and complexity of contemporary Trinidad and Tobago in all its dimensions, which constitute the socio-political and economic landscape that is Trinidad and Tobago. It recognizes the need to connect these more clearly and meaningfully with the emerging trends in our mas, calypso, pan - all elements of carnival - as well as chutney and emerging forms of music.
