Why Social Disability Studies at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine?
Innette Cambridge

In May 2004, a think-tank conference on the theme "Disability, Integration and Development - The Way Forward in Education: Unleashing Full Potential Through Full Participation" at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago heralded the beginning of Social Disability Studies at The University of the West Indies. This conference was also a catalyst for the University's Disability Liaison Unit, which marked the formal introduction of student supports for disabled students at the St. Augustine campus. It also enabled the establishment of the annual Wayne Naranjit Prize offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences for an outstanding student in Social Disability Studies.
